Tiered housing allocation with pre-announced rankings: an experimental analysis

چکیده
We study in the laboratory a variant of the house allocation with existing tenants problem where subjects are partitioned into tiers with hierarchical privileges, and they know their position in the priority queue before making their decision. We evaluate the performance of the modified versions of three well-known mechanisms: Top Trading Cycle, Gale-Shapley and Random Serial Dictatorship with Squatting Rights. For all three mechanisms, we find low rates of participation (around 40%), high rates of truth-telling conditional on participation (around 90%), high proportions of fair allocations (above 90%) and significant efficiency losses. We also observe differences across mechanisms: Random Serial Dictatorship is ranked highest in efficiency and Top Trading Cycle is ranked lowest in fairness. We then show that position in the queue has a positive and significant impact on participation whereas tier has lit∗Address for correspondence: Juan D. Finally, the individual analysis reveals that the majority of subjects who do not play according to the theory still follow discernible patterns of participation and preference revelation.

Gravitational Search Algorithm to Solve the K-of-N Lifetime Problem in Two-Tiered WSNs
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are networks of autonomous nodes used for monitoring an environment. In designing WSNs, one of the main issues is limited energy source for each sensor node. Hence, offering ways to optimize energy consumption in WSNs which eventually increases the network lifetime is strongly felt. Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) is a novel stochastic population-based meta-...
متن کاملThe Role of Regulatory in Price Control and Spectrum Allocation to Competing Wireless Access Networks
With the rapid growth of wireless access networks, various providers offer their services using different technologies such as Wi-Fi, Wimax, 3G, 4G and so on. These networks compete for the scarce wireless spectrum. The spectrum is considered to be a scarce resource moderated by the spectrum allocation regulatory (“regulatory” for short) which is the governance body aiming to maximize the socia...

In designing the tax system in the housing and real estate sector, increasing the efficiency and optimal allocation of resources in the urban area, redistribution of income and wealth, reducing the incentive for speculation and increasing tax revenues of national and local governments should be considered. Accordingly, with the expansion of tax bases and reduction of exemptions, it is possible ...

This research is done with an aim to compare the quality of housing in the two common appartment form on the rendering of main indexes of housing quality through two pre-designed neighbourhoods of Haft HozNeighborhood and the first phase of Ekbatan residential complex in the city of Tehran. Indexes of housing quality are extracted from the internal and external resources and are subjected to qu...
متن کاملBAREFOOT AND FOOTLOOSE DOCTORS: OPTIMAL RESOURCE ALLOCATION IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES WITH MEDICAL MIGRATION By
In light of the shortage of healthcare professionals, many developing countries operate a de facto two-tiered system of healthcare provision, in which Community Health Workers (CHWs) supplement service provision by fully qualified physicians. CHWs are relatively inexpensive to train but can treat only a limited range of medical conditions. This paper explicitly models a two-tiered structure of ...
